Screen Gatekeeper Privacy Policy

Effective date: April 29, 2026

Screen Gatekeeper is a Chrome extension that tracks time spent on selected distraction sites and shows a forced break overlay when the configured limit is reached.

Screen Gatekeeper does not collect, sell, share, or transmit user data to the developer or to any third-party service.

Data Handling

The extension stores the following data locally in Chrome extension storage:

  • Timer settings.
  • Enabled built-in sites.
  • User-added custom site domains.
  • Local usage seconds for supported sites.
  • Current break state.
  • Locally uploaded custom gatekeeper files, if the user chooses to add them.

This data stays on the user's device and is used only to provide the extension's break-timer and gatekeeper features.

Network Requests

Screen Gatekeeper does not make backend, analytics, telemetry, advertising, or remote configuration requests.

The popup includes links to tutorial and social pages. Those links open only when the user clicks them.

Permissions

  • storage: saves settings, timer state, and optional local custom gatekeeper assets.
  • scripting: injects the break overlay content script into selected supported sites.
  • alarms: wakes the extension periodically to settle local usage time because Manifest V3 background workers are not persistent.
  • Host permissions: let the extension run only where the gatekeeper feature is enabled.
  • Optional host permissions: let a user explicitly add custom sites. Chrome asks for permission before access is granted.

Custom Gatekeeper Files

If the user uploads a custom WebM, PNG, or WebP gatekeeper, that file is converted to a local data URL and stored in Chrome extension storage. It is not uploaded anywhere.

Ads and Analytics

Screen Gatekeeper does not show ads and does not use analytics.
